Pictures l took in the Supermarket (ALDI)

Screenshot 2020-03-07 at 11.06.33.png

When l went to the supermarket, l find that the supply of fresh meat is huge. We can buy a different kind of meat everyday in the supermarket with a barcode on the package that is similar to the other product. The efficiency lets people not give a thought where the meat comes from, but only considering energy, health, and fast.

The pictures above are took in Aldi. I find that there are actually many products that using dairy product as their ingredients. Most cakes have that. Also surprisingly, one cake i fond that using soft cream as the ingredients, but it highlights that it is for Vegan. So, I start to think that is the soft cream can be created without dairy product. I would like to do further research about this.

personal experience

In my family, we do not eat seafood since many seafood need to kill them at home. So, l did not eat them very often, and do not have a strong wish to eat them as well even when people order some in the restaurant. Therefore, l think our wish of eating meat is because a kind of habit that people are used to eat meat during the meal.

Primary Research based on religion background

Here is my primary research from people who believe in Buddhism. I asked them about why to become a vegetarian.

                                                    WechatIMG106.png

Screenshot 2020-03-09 at 08.09.10.png  .  Screenshot 2020-03-09 at 08.08.58.png

One reason that l become very interested towards this topic is because of my mother. My mother is a Buddhist. She has already insisting to become a vegetarian for about 15 years. She always talk about the equality of life that we cannot eat animals just because of the nutrition. I very agree with my mom, and l think more about this when l come to London. Since l start my independent life, and need to prepare food by myself. The abundant supply of meat product really surprises me. I start to questioning about how can it become so efficient? The efficiency let people feel numb, and do not think about the stories behind meat product when they buy it. So, this become the point l want to do my research.

Since the answer l get all in Chinese, so l summarise the points below:

After l determined my theme, I have asked my mother to write a brief answer what lead her not to eat meat. She said, she do not want to be killed, so do not kill other lives.

I also ask her friends who also believe in Buddhism. Most of the reason is because of love animals, and do not want to hurt them. Some people still eat meat because it is quite inconvenient for other people if eat in the restaurant or they still cannot give up the taste of the meat.

One of my mother’s friends do not eat meat is not because of religion. She loves to draw pictures about animals and their children.

Opinions about why people become vegetarian

Screenshot 2020-03-08 at 21.03.36.png

Screenshot 2020-03-08 at 21.03.45.png

I also have ask questions in whatsapp group chat. People are so nice, and answer my questions seriously. I find that there are mainly two reasons. One is the ethics about whether we should eat meat or not. The second one is for the environment reasons.

My understanding towards diagrams above

We can always see those diagrams in the supermarket, butcher shop or in the restaurant. The picture has showed very clearly which part of the meat you want to eat, that people can choose based on the picture. It is very successful as an advertisement to show different kind of meat. But l feel it let consumers treat meat product that is similar to vegetables or other lifeless product. When consumers look at the pictures, the will only consider about which part to eat, but not think about the story behind the farmed animals, and how they become the meat.

I feel this animation is very interesting that it clearly showed how human beings destroyed the place we lived and how we hurt the animals. I feel very inspired by this animation since it has showed the problem very clear that can make people understand easily what is going on, and what we need to be aware. I also want my work can be easily understand by majority of people since l think it is the most powerful technique can show the problems.

I am getting attracted by the surface and shapes of these vases. It is so beautiful and unique. I feel it must have some stories or concept that convey in those designs. The design is want to suggest a different health condition that can be inherited, which is as same as people might inherit the vase in a family. The designer has consider about the relationship between the vase and the disease. This make people consider about the disease, and health. Moreover, the designer has consider about the vase in another perspective that is can be inherited, which is not just the design of the shape and pattern.

I really like the pattern and the relationship that the designer want to show. I am thinking about maybe l also can express my concept about meat, and showed on the vase. Since l feel vase is a very common thing in our family, we buy vase to decorate, to put stuff inside. If l can show my concept on the vase, it is easy to show my awareness on farmed animals when they buy the vase.

Those masks are displayed in the wellcome collection. I was inspired by the variety shapes of those masks. They look so vivid and interesting. Each of them has different meaning, and the location to wear the mask is different. Some of them were used for exorcism rituals to defeat diseases and demons. Some of them just use to Camouflage or decoration. While l look at those masks, l feel some of them were inspired by the shape of animals. I become really interesting to find the relationship between the mask and the animals. It also inspired me maybe l can make something that is related to the mask, that is wearable and playful.

Janne- cow bench Julia Lohmann

Janne- cow bench Julia Lohmann

                default.jpg

This design has remind users the origin of the leather. They have been positioned exactly where it is on the “cow bench”. It remind people the death of one cow while using the leather.

The bench did not have head and legs of the cow because they have been removed at the first time when cows into the slaughtering house. The absence of these parts also showed the death of the cow.

I feel it is impressive. Sometimes it is hard and impossible to stop killing, and a business trend. But designers can use their power of design to inform users the stories behind, and bring awareness to users.

This is a special book that showing how many consumer products are made from Pig 05049. It has follow the dissection of Pig 05049, and all the products showing on this book are from single one pig.

It has showing the process behind the product, and telling customer the source of all those products. There are not a lot of words writing in this book, but express the idea really clear. I feel it is an impressive and clever design.

Moreover, l also like the design showed in the cover of the book. It has added a pig tag in the cover. It is the symbol of pig 05049. Open this book seems like discovering the inside of a pig’s body.

I wanted to borrow this book from csm library, but it has already been lend by other people. So l find a PDF document online.

Packaging for electronic products

Screenshot 2020-04-10 at 11.14.32.png

In KX library. I find this book, showing us about packaging specifically for electronic products. Electronic products are mass production, and less emotional. I felt it actually has a similar characteristic compared to packaging design for meat products. Both of these two kind of packaging have to be mass produced to ensure the demands of customers. But, While buying meat products, less people think about mass production, and how many animals being killed in one day.

Food Inspires design

I feel this image is cool and interesting. Putting the fried fish back into its original place of a fish. Remind people of its origin, and process.

Untitled_11032020_134109.jpgMaking bread as a shape of a bag is good for transportation. I feel this is creative that combined two different products together, and formed a new design. Even though l feel it is not clean, but the concept is still interesting.

Untitled_11032020_134109_001.jpg

Food specifically for soldiers. The package vacuumed the food that can keep food for longer time in normal temperature.

Untitled_11032020_134109_003.jpg

Food can also be a symbol. Food sometimes can represent a kind of culture or a country. Using them as the symbol can be unique and help understanding.  For example, the picture above is Japanese national flag. Japan is famous for its salmon and rice, Using these two food as the symbol can showing their culture, and help people get a general idea about their eating habit.

Untitled_11032020_124315_007.jpg

Using cloth as the packaging make them look more sustainable, but also make them look luxury. Moreover, give people a sense of fresh feeling while open this packaging, since normally do not use cloth as the package for water.

Design Inspiration

After reading the article "5 design tips to enhance your packaging design", l find some other good package design on this website. Even though it is not designed for meat product, but still give me inspirations through its design philosophy.

                                                  bee1de0a890238a37bb6910e4543f8bc.jpg

                                                  cd9be164711b3185996ef273244def78.jpg

These two packaging designs using bold words that showing the idea of the product in a concise way. The minimalist style of the packaging conveys the ideas clearly, and both of these two packages choosing two colors that highlight the name of this product. At the same time, the highlight color echo with the color in the other part of this design.

 Pastry Flour

KeshetCohen_5.jpg

The shape for this pastry flour looks like pastries that clearly showed to consumers that this flour is for specific baking, but not general flour. This has clarified with other different flours; it also makes it very unique while placing in the shop that really attract consumers.

Moreover, the packaging highlights the humanistic experience, and encourage thoughtful consumerism by encouraging to use the entire packaging. The unique design brings fresh feelings to people’s life that can ensure they have a happy feeling every time when they are using this pastry flour.

Real Banana Milk (Concept)

                                                       Real-Banana-Milk-3.jpg

                                                  Real-Banana-Milk-4.jpg

The packaging design for this banana milk looks like the real banana that you can peel the packaging and drink the milk inside. This give buyers a feeling of fresh and organic, that it is give a similar emotion while take a bit of the real banana.

This is really clever, that let me know that a good packaging never using a lot of words to describe, but using strong colour or shape as the language to express the concept and idea.

New form

NewForm-2.jpg

NewForm-5.jpgNew form is a water bottle packaging design that clearly demonstrate the positive results of regular water drinking that it can help people lose weight quickly. I feel this design showing the concept clearly and innovative that shows water can create a better body shape, but l also think about the transportation problem. This design might take up a lot of space during transportation and may destroy the packaging easily.

Moller/Barnekow

MoellerBarnekow-11.jpg

The concept for this design is “Style and smart of the go”. This packaging aligns with the current lifestyle for most people that eating on the go. This is easy to open, and will not mess up while eating on the way to work.

The traditional package wrapped in thin folded paper that people do not know where to start to eat that sometimes hands still need to touch the food inside, and may easy to mess up. This new design let consumers know how to eat easily, and hands will not touch the food packaged inside that will not be dirty as well.

I find there are actually a lot of cheap, but sustainable materials in the pond shop and charity shop. For the first image, it is coconut fiber. I know this material is on a material book. I thought it is not usual to see them, but it has already been widely used and sale in the shop. It really surprised me. It is not expensive as well.

I also found many second hand clothes. It inspired me to use some old clothes as my material can also be sustainable and cheep.

Exhibition in RA (Eco visionaries)

The pictures below are some of my favourite works l saw in the exhibition of Eco visionaries. Some pictures l found online since they are better quality than the photo l took by myself.

I went to the Exhibition in RA-eco visionaries. It has mainly showed viewers how architects, artists and designers are inquiring into these ecological transformations, and producing the resolutions about this issue. It has showed their future thinking about our relationship with nature. I feel really inspired by some of their avant guard thinking towards future living, the relationship between human beings and animals.

The background of this video is the death of Sudan, for which is the last male northern white rhinoceros. The video has showed a process of how a computer based rhinoceros formed a rhinoceros that look as same as the real one. The artist using this to questioning would this new rhino that created by human is real? Why neglecting existing ones while creating a new life forms?

While l look at this video, l feel really sad that we do not give attention to those animals alive, and live near to us, but only think about those animals are already be in imminent danger. If we care about them at first place, they will not extinct. Whatever human did after like recreating them by using biotechnology is not them anymore.

These series of works allow humans extract nutritions from synthetic biology and develop new digestive system like mammals. I feel the form of the design is very interesting that it is wearable and inspired by the animals. The designer also consider about human's future living. Since there may not have enough food to eat in 2050, this design help people to get nutrition in another way. The perspective is quite unique, and give people a possibility on how to live in the future.

How it inspired me:

This series of work also inspired me that maybe l can make a wearable device that can simulate how animals work and live. Let people see how animals see the world. So, people can actually see the world with animals' perspective that can help us better understand them.

Psychological care for children to facilitate medical examinations at hospitals

The toy is designed for children to better understanding how the hospital work. Hospital for children might be a place scare a lot. I feel this design is clever since it teaches children how the hospital work while playing. When children go to hospital again, they might not be that scary since they have a better understanding about the hospital.

I feel inspired by the way it designed that educate children in a happy and playful way. Animal welfare for children actually a sensitive topic. I do not want children to see its brutal part, but still want to increase their awareness towards this issue.

The cow has transformed into a self-sufficient machine for the production of milk. People can get the milk by themselves by going to the green space where the cow stay. The cow also equipped with a welfare sensor that allows them to rate the costumers, it also records the data that is for technology, veterinary and nutritious maintenance.

I feel the design is good since it lets people to get the fresh milk by themselves, and it also can educate people how it being produce. When people get the milk by themselves, people are getting the connection with the food production again, and care about the feeling of the cow again. Compared to buying the milk in the supermarket, we less care about cows, we do not think about the process behind. The Cow&Co project bring the farm animals into the city, reconnect them with consumers, and make people be more aware of the animal welfare.

Bioplastic meat packaging

bioplastic-packaging-meat-animal-waste_dezeen_2364_col_0.jpg

This meat packaging (bioplastic) is made out of the skin of the animals, for which reduce the waste, and environment impact. It is made by boiling animals skin in the water to create a gel like substance.

My thinking:

For environment, it is sustainable, and degradable. For the ethic problem, l think it is not that friendly to animals. However, it may also made people think about animals when buying this product since it let me feel l am carrying an animal's skin after l know the story behind this packaging. It also can remind people and let them rethink about the animals.

This edible food packaging is an alternative choice for plastic packaging. This can be eaten after use or composted. This packaging is being produced in a fermentation process. This is used to store dry and semi dried food

Since the package is made through fermentation. It has low PH level that can keep food for longer time that decrease waste. Growing materials are good for environment. I am not only like the concept of this packaging design, but also the shape, and it's texture. They are different compared to the package we normally see in the supermarket, it looks really natural and sustainable. This kind of new design can make customers think about environment, and bring a fresh feelings while open this packaging.

It is semi transparent, and looks soft that l believe this material can have more potential to do in the future.

The artist made this series of works are want to show the imperfect, blemished skin to promote the feelings of fascination.

I have been interested in this series of work is because of its use of material that can create such a similar texture of skin. The artist using the silicone rubber as its main material.

However, while l do further research about this material, it is really not sustainable, so l cannot using this material to do the design. But the texture is really amazing.

Material research in KX library

I also did some research on material in KX library. All those materials are sustainable. Moreover, they all give me a feeling of warm and skin like texture. I am thinking about using them as the material for packaging.

packaging of the world

In week 28, l get the feedback from my tutor for my current project. The tutor has suggest me a website called packaging of the world that including variety of packaging designs. I start with meat packaging research.

Desiderio Rodriguez-Carnes Selectas

                                            DESIDERIO_CARNE_02.jpg

The packaging is designed for the deep-frozen meat. It aims to let customers know that deep frozen product is as good as fresh meat. The big meat picture reminds customer the meat sale in butcher shop.

I feel it is clever that the big fresh meat picture connects with the word “fresh”, that can use less words to explain. Secondly, the meat color on this series of package is bright, that attract consumers while purchase in the shop.

Super Meat

                                super-meat-01.jpg

Super meat cultured meat from animal stem cells. It is not going to hurt animals during the process. However, it has the same taste with normal meat, but without slaughtering process. I feel this is a really good approach that animals can no longer be hurt, and also benefit for environments. (I feel this packaging design actually has similar concept compared to my design. Both of these two designs considered about animals’ welfare, and if super meat can take over the “real meat” completely will be extremely good.)

The packaging design for the super meat is wants to encourage customers buying super meat instead of “real meat” that make them believe super meat is as delicious as real meat.

I think there are two good points for this packaging:

  1. It is made by polystyrene (normal meat packaging), it is transparent that can clearly show the meat inside. It is fresh, and no difference compared to “real meat”.
  2. Clarity and Simplicity-Using short but strong sentence that has showed the concept of the brand. The cow still goes moo!” means the beef is made by cow, but the cow is still alive. It is amazing, and it made customers feel it is their obligation to buy the super meat that do not hurt animals.

Shadows born in good farming

                                           shadows_3.jpg

The farmers hands formed the shape of the animals. This highly showed the connection between farmers and animals. The good care from farmers result in fresh and organic meat.

I feel this packaging design is successful since its unique and eye catching. This made consumers feel the meat is fresh and see the blocked process behind the meat product. Moreover, the design of shadowing makes them stand out from the other products. It made customers feel curious about what is it and want to take a look at it.

5 design tips to enhance your packaging design

Then, l found the article about 5 tips for packaging design in this website, it inspired me a lot that make me rethink about my design of the packaging. Here are some bullet points l note down from this article.

5 design tips to enhance your packaging design

  1. Stick to clarity and simplicity

Some mystery, but not too much

Clear show what is the product/brand/remain on the shelf or goes home with the customer

Simplicity, subtle elements, textured patterns

  1. Play on personalization

Reflect the brand/appeal customers/memorable unboxing experience

  1. Make it up with the brand

Color, style, font, shape – brand

  1. Typography matters

Understand better! / no strain

  1. Make it productive

Add value to the package – make it usable to some extent

(eg. Cut out shape/ text – can be used by customers in some way)

After looking through these five points. I feel it really helped me. I have many ideas while l decided to make packaging design, and l have a strong wish to put all my ideas on single on one package. This will not look good since some of them may be really distractive that buyers cannot understand very quickly.

If selling one product in the shop, it should be clear, and eye catching that can convey ideas as soon as possible to the buyers. Since customers will never spend a lot of time in the shop for buying things. So, less words and clear idea will be extremely useful.

From the fifth point, designers also need to consider the afterlife of the design packaging. We should not encourage users throw away package directly, but encourage them to give them a second life.
